Before we can explain the differences we need to explain how each one reacts to concrete and we do so by asking:
"What is air-entrained concrete?"
The definition of "entrain" related to chemistry is "to carry along" "draw in" or "to incorporate"
Air-entrained concrete is produced by adding air-entraining agents or mixtures to Portland cement. These agents are the introduction of billions of very very small air pockets or bubbles to the concrete which help relieve pressure in the concrete allowing the moisture in the concrete to expand when it freezes. Air-entrained concrete is used in colder climates and is widely used and even recommended for warmer climates in southern states.
Air-entrained concrete tends to be on the sticky side so Magnesium and Aluminum floats are typically recommended as the concrete shouldn't stick. Wood floats are recommended for non-air-entrained concrete.
Bronze is an excellent material for finishing concrete as it is heavier, has more material making it thicker, lasts longer, and more expensive than Steel. You will usually find these materials used in concrete edgers which make a nice smooth rounded finished edge along your concrete forms. Most would not recommend using a steel edger on concrete, however, because steel seals the concrete prematurely trapping bleed water which leads to cracking, "popping", or delamination after the concrete has hardened.
Lastly, there is GATORLOY, a proprietary alloy, developed by Gator Tools which is:
- Recommended for air-entrained concrete
- Harder and stronger than many common concrete tools using the materials above
- Excellent wear resistance
- Reduces the trapping of bleed water
- Reduces surface closure
GatorLoy Takes a Bite out of Magnesium!
Built Heavier, Built Stronger, Built to Last Longer!
GatorLoy takes all of the qualities of the different materials used in concrete finishing tools on the market today and wraps it all in to one high-quality and durable material. You will find GatorLoy a common staple in all of the products manufactured by Gator Tools, so you can be assured that you will get the same great fantastic finishing experience from start to finish.
Gator Tools is committed to the support of American Manufacturing and the American Worker, which is why ALL Gator Tools are designed, fabricated, assembled, and shipped from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA! When we say made in the USA, we MEAN made in the USA!
Made by U.S. Workers from U.S. Materials.
